After a conversation with Jacob Cruser about posting his life paddling list on his blog, I thought it would be fun to do the same here. I’ve included links to either trip reports on Oregonkayaking.net or guide pages on Oregonpaddling.northwest-rivers.com for additional info. My next post I’ll organize the list into some of my favorite runs and maybe some groupings … Continue reading →

The North, South and Middle Forks of the Smith River are about as close to Oregon as you can get and still be in California. Rugged mountains, smooth granite, clear rivers, warm weather but only about 5 hours from Portland, think of the Smiths as Cali-lite. Our original goal for this trip was the Cal-Salmon. We were looking for redemption … Continue reading →

Hells Canyon Dam to Heller Bar photos by Pete Giordano and Paul Bunce With the busy rafting season behind us, a group of Blue Sky guides and friends headed over to spend several days rafting on the Snake River through Hells Canyon. I’d heard good things about Hells Canyon over the years but for some reason never really pulled the … Continue reading →

The Killer Fang section of the Clackamas River has had a fearsome reputation in the past. Perhaps this is due to the 3rd edition of Soggy Sneakers which opened it’s description with: “This secluded and scenic run on the Clackamas River is also one of the most dangerous. A perfect roll, reliable equipment, and a competent leader are prerequisites.” This … Continue reading →

Well, we are finally back to normal winter weather after one of the craziest stretches of weather I’ve ever experienced in Oregon. Portland was virtually shut down for several days around Christmas because of snow. We had over a foot of snow in some parts of the city and because plowing is pretty spotty, it’s pretty interesting trying to get … Continue reading →

With low water all week, I decided to get out for a quick run on the Sandy Gorge. Since the removal of Marmot Dam, the Gorge has higher flows than in the past which should extend it’s season longer in the spring. Today it was a good medium flow of 1250cfs. The dam removal created a fair amount of debris … Continue reading →
